How long does it take to train for an Ironman?!

“How much training do you need for Ironman”  is what the question was.

Instead of replying to the person in private I decided to make this a public post that could maybe help out a person or two.

The answer is “ I don’t know”.

There are so many variables that come into play and so much to look at.

  • Are you currently working out?
  • How long have you been working out for?
  • Can you swim?
  • Can you bike?
  • Can you run?
  • Are you a couch potato?

All those questions would determine the answer to that question. Now, one thing you definitely need to know for sure is to swim, bike and run. If you can do those, you can do an ironman, especially a half ( 70.3 ). So that’s the good news.

Now I’m assuming people reading aren’t pros, if they were, they wouldn’t be reading this. I’m also assuming you haven’t done an ironman before and I’m assuming you have at least 8 months till whatever ironman you want to do.

Ok. Great. You can do it then.

Now due to me not personally knowing you, I can’t give you a tailored fit answer but I can give you good general advice that can help you accomplish your first ever ironman and boy is it an accomplishment.

Firstly, you need to sit down and mark your calendar into mini events. I suggest before you get ahead of yourself and plan an ironman, a good way to get your body ready is to prepare for other mini races. Do 5k’s, 10k’s , half marathon, sprint or olympic triathlons and bike races ( if those are available in your area ). Doing those will give you confidence and a feel for racing.

It’s so much easier to prepare for smaller races than a huge ironman. Approach it with baby steps and by the time ironman comes you’ll have basically done ironman but in steps.

Do not do too much too soon or else you WILL get injured.

Another key point is diet. The lighter you are, the better your body responds to all the pounding it’ll be receiving. Start eating better, greener and leaner. Eat a diet rich in whole food, fresh fruit and vegetables.

This is as general and basic as I can lay it out but I’m more than happy to answer questions.

Oh and I have done 4 half iron distance races + a ton of mini races. So I kinda know what I’m talking about. Kind of.

For those attempting to do it, it’s an amazing achievement. I get the chills just thinking about race day. It’s indescribable.

  1. Really sounds like an incredible experience. How long is an Ironman? I’ve heard they’re the biggest physical challenge out there, do you agree?
